ABOUT THE COURSE
The course will focus on the films of Italian filmmaker Roberto Rossellini from Rome, Open City (1945) and Stromboli (1950) to The Age of the Medici (1973) and his last film The Messiah (1975). We will study Rossellini's filmmaking methods and how these shaped and were shaped by the cultural, historical, artistic, and political changes that took place in pre-war and post-war Italy. We will study Rossellini's relationship to realism as well as to Italian art, literature, and architecture. We will examine how his films continued to, but were also a radical break from, the conventions and values of the 1930s studio system established in Italy during the Fascist era and the one established in the US by Hollywood.COURSE OBJECTIVES
